The heavy construction equipment market was valued at USD 204.4 billion in 2023 and is estimated at USD 233.4 billion in 2026. It is projected to reach USD 289.3 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 5.2% from 2024 to 2030, according to Grand View Research. Europe led the industry with a 36.0% revenue share in 2023, while Asia Pacific is expected to grow fastest.

Key Market Size & Projections

The heavy construction equipment market is moving from a post-2023 recovery phase into a sustained expansion phase. The base-year value of USD 204.4 billion rises by about USD 29.0 billion by 2026. A further USD 55.9 billion is expected to be added between 2026 and 2030. By our calculation, that means the market adds more value in the last four forecast years than in the first three, a sign that growth is accelerating rather than flattening.

Three forces sit behind this outlook. The first is urbanization. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs projects that nearly 68% of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050. The second is population growth, which increases demand for housing. The third is government spending on bridges, road networks, ports, railroads and metros.

Regional momentum differs sharply. Europe’s lead reflects a region where, according to the European Urban Initiative, roughly 75% of EU inhabitants already live in cities, towns and suburbs. Automation is also gaining ground there as skilled labor becomes scarce. Asia Pacific is the growth engine. India’s foreign direct investment in townships, housing and built-up infrastructure reached USD 33.52 billion in December 2023, while China’s mining and construction activity supports demand. North America held a significant share in 2023, supported by urbanization, infrastructure upgrades and mining activity.

For anyone sizing this opportunity, the headline CAGR matters less than where the fast segments sit. Several of them grow faster than the 5.2% market average, as the next section shows.

Top Equipment & Sales Trends

Material handling equipment is the volume leader, holding 51.0% of revenue in 2023. Cranes, forklifts, hoists, conveyors and excavators are used heavily in high-rise construction and in redevelopment of crowded urban areas. Earthmoving equipment is the faster mover, with an expected CAGR of 5.9% through the forecast period. Excavators, backhoe loaders, motor graders, wheel loaders and dump trucks are pulled forward by mining, excavation and demolition work. Rising demand for minerals such as copper, cobalt, nickel and lithium, which feed wind turbines and electric vehicles, strengthens that pull.

The most telling pattern is the split between where equipment sells today and where it is growing.

  • Propulsion: Internal combustion engines held the largest share in 2023 because they are cheap to build and maintain, run on multiple fuels and deliver high power in limited space. Electric propulsion is expected to grow fastest from 2024 to 2030 as batteries improve and charging networks expand. Volvo Construction Equipment’s June 2023 launch of the L25 Electric compact wheel loader and ECR25 Electric compact excavator in Japan shows where this is heading.
  • Size and power: Machines under 100 HP led in 2023 because urban maintenance and highway repair jobs leave little working space. The 201-400 HP range is projected to grow fastest, driven by mining and heavy lifting. Within engine capacity, 5-10L units lead today, while units above 10L are projected to grow fastest.
  • Application and end use: Material handling is the largest application, while transportation is expected to grow fastest as road and railway construction increases dump truck and hauler demand. Infrastructure was the largest end-use segment in 2023, with mining expected to post significant growth.

The takeaway for buyers and dealers is that compact, low-power machines carry today’s revenue, while large, high-capacity and increasingly electric machines carry tomorrow’s growth.

Two commercial shifts are also reshaping sales. Autonomy is becoming real: Komatsu reported in March 2024 that its FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System had passed 700 units sold by February 2024. Rental and leasing are rising too, because machinery and maintenance costs are climbing and leasing firms can supply operators and drivers along with the equipment.

Major Global & U.S. Manufacturers

The competitive field is led by Caterpillar, Komatsu Ltd., AB Volvo, Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., Deere & Company and CNH Industrial N.V. Liebherr, Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., SANY and XCMG Group complete the list of profiled players. Caterpillar’s range spans articulated trucks, dozers, excavators, motor graders and off-highway trucks, while Komatsu’s covers excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders and dump trucks.

Strategy across these firms follows a common pattern: more spending on research and development, closer collaboration with governments and partners, and a push into smarter machines. In February 2024, Caterpillar added technology package upgrades to its medium dozer line, including the Cat Assist with ARO package on the D4, D5, D6, D6 XE and D7 models. In June 2024, Volvo CE launched the 20-tonne EC210 excavator “Built for Bharat” for the Indian market, which shows how global brands now tailor products to regional growth markets.

In the United States, the market was the dominant national market within North America in 2023. Large, densely populated cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and Phoenix keep demand high. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis reported US construction spending of USD 2,142,126 million in May 2024, one of the highest levels in the country’s history. China’s market is shaped by the presence of Komatsu, SANY, Hitachi Construction Machinery and other major players, with lithium mining adding to equipment use.
